I posted a couple pic of this somewhere but can't find it. Anyway....Got this 49 a couple months ago and I have replaced the inner and outer tie rod ends, adjuster sleeves, plus the upper ball joints, and got it aligned. The front end is a 91 S10. There is still some play in the steering wheel and it feels like it wants to follow every crack in the road. While turning the steering wheel and watching the steering shaft there is some play. What I'm seeing I don't like. The steering box is new. The steering column is out of a 1984 Chevy truck. I would like to replace from the steering box to the column where it comes out of the firewall and attaches with a nut and bolt but just not sure of the size at each end and what to get. Looking for a little help guys.

Did a little research and looks like I can get a rag to u joint coupler to replace the rag joint an connect directly to the steering box. Just not sure how to connect to the upper end. It's looks tapered to me???

Got it figured out.

change the rag to a steering joint, new steering shaft and a joint at the steering column

Thanks for the info. I have all new Borgeson ujoints and a telescoping shaft in route from JEGS.

Before I toss all this crap I thought I show what I pulled out of my truck.

That wasn't safe to drive, for sure.

That might not even get you most of the way home. (Which is the level of durability I generally shoot for with my trucks.)

Got my parts from JEGS in 2 days. Started my project this morning and I'd like to say it was a no brainier but I did have a couple issues to work through. The Borgeson 30 spline u-joint did not want to fit over the steering box shaft without a little help from a BFH. The tube from the steering column was a little big so I had to get out the Dremel. Once I cut and drilled a 3/8" hole in the telescoping shaft and mounted everything up I had a hard time getting to the set screws and nuts to tighten them up. Had to get the wife help on this one. I wasn't sure what I was going to put inside the steering column tube for the set screw off the u-joint to tighten up against but I cut a short piece off the old shaft and tapped it inside the tube and it worked like a charm. All went well and only took about 3 hrs. This project cured all my steering issues. I am now a Happy Camper.
