It's pretty straightforward. You will definitely need a press to complete the job.

How much smaller I couldn't really say. It may vary from one transmission to another based on how the tolerances stack up, and how corroded yours might be.

Four Speed Syncromesh Transmission Overhaul (Thanks to Brad Allen.) Also, Stovebolter sstock has done quite a few of these and says it's not too difficult.

When I had to work on my gearbox a few years ago, I made a stand just like what they show in the 2nd pic. Made working on the tranny, so much easier. Still have it buried somewhere in one of my truck tool boxes.
