I know someone looking for a 55-62 Chevy 261, if anyone knows where one is at/available.. .

I sold one to Mike Roache a few years ago that's squirreled away some where...maybe he can be talked out of it???

Research every vehicle that used that engine, and keep a mental note. Then hit every junk yard that you can find. More so, the little out of the way ones.

Mid-1950's through early 60's school buses are a good source for 261's, if you can find an old-time salvage yard that would buy them up for scrap value. You're also fairly close to Canada, and some of our stovebolter buddies up there say Pontiac car engines are still available at times. Those engines also have the option of running hydraulic valve lifters, since the passenger car 261 blocks were bored with a front to rear big oil passage through all the lifter bores.

That is exactly how/where I got the 1960 261 that has been in my suburban since 1972.

The rings were 0.060 over (barely rebuildable) : $200 back in 1972 - Leon said he was giving me a good price.

Good luck findIng a good one in an old “dismantling yard” - they got sold fast.

I used to scavenge up every "worn out" small block 4 bolt main bearing block any of my competitors were discarding, for pennies on the dollar, or sometimes free. I had an engine rebuilding program as part of the course I was teaching, and my students needed blocks to practice on. The next time a lot of those guys saw their "junk" engine it was diving into a turn ahead of them, with 8 new standard bore sleeves installed. The rest of the race block preparation had already been done for me- - - -free of charge by the guys who thought they were discarding junk!

After a while, it was hard to scavenge up any "junk" from a competitor!

I looked for a good long time, then found one on ebay and it happened to be just fifty miles up the road. Complete long block standard bore with correct big rochester B carb, $500. I had it machined and assembled it myself, turned out to be a really good engine. That engine will run circles around the 305 V6 in my 64 GMC 1/2 ton.

The moral of the story, keep looking and checking craiglist, good info on availing yourself to all the vehicles that had them including canadian cars.

BTW, I still have the stock slugs and a new set of standard rings if somebody wants them.

In this context, I'm pretty sure Billy is referring to a Detroit Diesel.

See, Milliman failed to mention in his little hit a run attack that the Beetle in question is the Wifey's. Even if I wanted to make it my daily d, I don't think it would be very well received, much less the idea of doing a DD swap.

Either DJ is slow to respond or too scared to do so, I will explain the "Smiley" reference as it applies to Mr. Marlow.
It was indeed around 0230 when DJ and I were observing the general condition of the party members, when I asked the question, "How do you know when so-and-so is hammered?"
We started with a member from PA who has locomotive history who always denies his state of abnormality. It was determined that his "tell" was the delay of his eyeballs coming around to look at you well after his head was facing you.
So I asked DJ how do you know when Billy is in the groove? He said, "He can't stop smiling." At that moment, "Smiley" was born.
It was determined that the "tell" of another esteemed member was that he becomes a close talker, with eyes wide open. And, as it turns out, he also loses all sense of time...

Well , apparently I missed a heck of entertaining conversation by going to bed early that night .
In the future I shall consider traveling during the day and having a good nights sleep before these events .
If all goes well I'll be doing the trip with my replacement engine , a 1959 261 out a 2 ton truck that I paid a hefty amount for, that is in metric money, would be considerably less in U.S. funds. I hope to have that and some new improved paint installed in the engine bay before to long .

Duly noted, and guilty as charged on all charges. I will not be requesting the mercy of the court.

I do remember the breakfast burritos. Not much else........Oh yeah - this is a 261 thread. I have one of those.
