The attention to detail paid off reading several members instructions over and over to get every detail correct, took my 54 half ton Hydramatic out for a drive two or three times and she just gets better each time, well worth the money and the effort.

Did mine a few years ago. Best thing I did to the rig. You will enjoy the higher gears.

I purchased mine through mothertruckertrucks, they used to sell outright but now use eBay. Very good experience, make sure you order the truck ring and pinion and not he car version.

It's listed as follows: 1940 1941 1947 1948 1949 Chevy GMC truck 3.55:1 Ring and Pinion Gears 1/2 ton GM

Yes, the eBay listing is :
"1940 1941 1947 1948 1949 Chevy GMC truck 3.55:1 Ring and Pinion Gears 1/2 ton GM"

If that is the listing, the description is more extensive:
"New 3.55:1 ring & pinion gears for all 1940-1953 Chevy & GMC 1/2 ton trucks."

And, it could be noted that it will work on 1954 1/2 ton trucks, if you use an earlier ring-gear carrier?

New bearings also make a big difference on how well the assy. goes back together. I was fortunate to find all NOS american made
bearings for the pinion, axle and carrier all on Ebay. Dont forget a new Oakie bushing as well.

Yes, cant say enough good about the quality of the ring and pinion. If you want OEM smooth and quiet these gears are the answer. I too purchased all new pinion and diff bearings nos off ebay. Gear setup was straight forward, also a great time to install an okie bushing while it is all apart.

You might want to also consider the:
- installation kit
- drive shaft seal (Okie bushing)
- u-joint repair kit

Buy the kits or buy the new parts.

Jim Carter & Chevs of the 40s should also have parts/kits?

Thanks will be considering all of the parts recommended by Tim .I have a extra tube and diff assembly I want to take apart to see how difficult it is going to be .I have been reading lots of posts about the swap the extra diff has bendix brakes on it but I don’t know the year it was from My truck is a 54 but had a different rear axle in it so I used one from a 51 truck .

Bendix brakes were standard on all wheels on 1954 3100 trucks.
