I'm trying to decode the ID tag on an NP540. Does anyone have a book for these? The stamping is faint but I think the first line is 643584 GD82 (the G might be a C or a 6). Is this an overdrive trans? The second line is self explanatory with the date and model number (10 19 67 540). Appreciate any help.

Count gear teeth. If the cluster driven(front gear) is larger than the input shaft(mating) gear, it is probably not OD. OD trans without 2 speed rears are awkward because of large ratio gap where 3rd. was removed to make OD, but worthwhile otherwise. If it is OD would be fwd and right shift rail, direct would then be straight back. Either way, fwd and right shift rail will tell you. Steel pins in Al top housing are frequently loose, can relocate with epoxy or welding girdle on outside.

I seem to remember NP540 with L (1st) on the left & R on the right to be direct drive while R on the left & L on the right Overdrive.
