Is this 61 235 the good one to swap in place of a 1940 216? Seems like a good price.

Hard to determine.

A shiny "pig-in-poke"!

Glossy paint job, but, "The outside is cleaned and painted but i haven't done anything with the inside it ran when i took it apart to clean it."

That's what's known as a "rattle can rebuild". Basically, you're buying a paint job. The price is at least twice what I'd offer, possibly three times. Unless you can hear an engine run it's a "rebuildable core" and you should offer an appropriate price.

Pros:
61 is one of the most recent manufacture 235's- - - -they stopped installing them in either 61 or 62, depending on who you ask. It will have the 848 casting number cylinder head, which has a higher compression ratio than 56 and earlier engines. If it's out of a car, it's probably got hydraulic valve lifters. That can be good or bad, depending if the lifters work properly.

Cons:
The low-mount water pump won't work well with the 1940 radiator. The fan sits too low and might hit the lower radiator hose. You'll probably need to install a pump relocation plate to be able to use the 216 style water pump. Unless the owner is willing to provide the intake and exhaust manifolds, carburetor, generator, distributor and starter in the purchase price, you'll end up spending big bucks rounding up enough accessories to complete the project. That one's a $200.00 maximum engine in my neighborhood.

We used to call them spray can rebuilds, beware of the engine that has had no work and looks shiny painted, should be considered to blow nice blue smoke. Unchecked engines should get no more than core value.

It sure is purty. Too bad the paint will be destroyed by the hot tank that your engine rebuilder will need to do before he rebuilds the engine for you.

I bought one similar to this (Complete) for $250. Seller said it was .010 over ran good when pulled ect...I opened it up it was .080 over with very bad cylinder walls...unless you run it or open it it's like a Cracker Jack prize (Unknown). Luckily the carburetor, started & generator were good. Also the Intake/exhaust. The head was "848" and not cracked. Those were worth the $ but I was out a block.

That 80 over block would be a good candidate for six sleeves and a set of STD. bore pistons. I used to do that with "junk" racing blocks my competitors were throwing away. Eventually they figured out they were getting beat with their own discards! My students needed blocks to practice machining on, and the guys who sponsored my race engine building program appreciated the chance to get a race-prepared block at a bargain price!

Yep, and all you need is a $80,000.00 worth of machine equipment and tools (used prices), and a HRL to run the equipment, but I think they quit making those a long time ago. smile

Hmmmm- - - - -I guess my $750.00 used Van Norman boring bar and a 3 lb. BFH to drive the sleeves in with won't make the cut. Please don't tell all those blocks I salvaged with that setup that they won't work- - - - - -I'd hate to have to give all those winnings back!

If you are looking for a another engine, why not a 261 instead. Pretty much everything is interchangeable with the 235. I had one (bought the rebuilt block
from Tom Langdon) and used my 235 stuff including the 848 head. Added dual carbs, exhaust and HEI. It was a great running engine with good power.
However, I doubt it will be as cheap as a 235 (both are great engines).

Mostly because I don’t know where to find a 261, and this 235 is about 15 miles from
Me.
