For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jul 2019 Posts: 51 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2019 Posts: 51 | For the 1951 Chevy 3600 (3/4 ton) some sites advertise the same wheel cylinder for front and rear, and other sales sites advertise a different style for front and rear. Who's correct? I've read the descriptions carefully, and read the 1948-1953 Chevrolet Shop Manual (Sections 5-3 and 5-5) and the shop manual images suggest the same wheel cylinder for all wheels. Only asking because I don't have time for returns to an online parts store because they're advertising is wrong. Any suggestions or clarity on this? Thanks. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | According to JC,s part list the 51 3/4 ton trucks used a different wheel cyl. for front & rear. 52 was the last year for Huck brakes on 3/4 & larger trucks. 53 up used Bendix style brakes & are completely different. George They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Boy, wish I would have stocked up in the 1950s.... $4.85 list price. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy morerog and guys, According to my United brake catalogue the front and rear wheel cylinders on 3600s from 1946 to1952 are different, fronts are 1 1/4" bore Raybestos p/n WC3406, rears are 1 3/8" bore Raybestos p/n WC4358, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | 3B, The USA MPC shows them to be the same? casting code 5450822 part number: 5453818 But, replacement parts are 1 1/4" bore and the MPC shows the original bore was 1 1/8" core (I think)? NOTE added later: morerog: I suggest following 3B's advice/information. The 1952 Specifications Manual confirms 3B's information (the 1953 Manual is unreadable). The MPC must be incorrect (Or, I am reading it incorrectly)?

The MPC must be incorrect (Or, I am reading it incorrectly)? Rears are the same side to side with the brake lines pointing straight out. The fronts are different in the direction of the brake line pointing as they angle for access and the side to side difference makes them both point the same direction. Wow! I hope I made sense with that explanation. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy Greg_H and guys, in my catalogue the illustrations for both front and rear wheel cylinders show the connection ports facing straight out and list only one part number for the front wheel cylinders and one part number for the rear wheel cylinders. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2019 Posts: 559 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2019 Posts: 559 | I had the exact same drama when i ordered all the brakes for my 49 gmc 150. I checked a bunch of other places and noticed wheel cylinders were listed different for 3/4 tons but then when i called JC they never even asked. I actually asked them and they said they didn’t have anything different listed. I was all worried about it but after a while I decided to just roll with it because i was still moving forward with all the other stuff and i put it all together with the dual master and it all works flawlessly. It actually stops way better than i hoped for. So moral of the story is..... i dont know. BUT the stuff JC sold me is in and working perfect. | | |
