Anyone have a source for new, or at least good usable condition, 1955-1962 GM 55T spider gears and/or side gears? I have a 55 1/2 ton open diff that I'd like to rebuild. I have all new bearings and seals, as well as a new ring & pinion set, and a new cross shaft. Unfortunately, some of the spiders and both side gears are a bit too worn. I'd like to replace them with something that has a little more life left. NOS would be perfect but, a set of good used gears that have not been abused is fine. If you know where I can find good usable GM 55T spider/side gears, or you have a set available, let me know. Thanks.

Page attached from Toms differentials says that they can upgrade the axles & internals to newer 30 spline parts.

The spider gears are GM 1358192 (10 tooth), the side gears are GM 3652344. I already have a new cross shaft and R&P, as well as all new bearings & seals for the diff pinion and axles. If I'm going to rebuild the diff, it does not make sense to use the old worn gears. This 55 1/2 ton diff is going into my 42 3/4 ton rear end, per the tech tip article on this site. Want to upgrade from the 4.55 diff that was OE to 1942 3/4 ton.

Thanks for the info. I am looking at this as a possible alternative to rebuilding my 55 diff. It would allow for easier parts sourcing but, it is also an increased expense. Thanks again for your help.

Good luck with the rebuild!
Another alternative might be sending your old gears to these guys:

I'd be interested to see a quote from them.

Thanks George. I'll check them out. Basically, today I removed the spider gears and side gears from the carrier. What I found was not pretty. The surfaces that the side gears and spider gears ride on are very heavily scored. At this point, I'm going to need to replace the carrier as well. Starting to look like I need to find another alternative to change out this differential to a more modern carrier and gears. Guess I'll continue the research. If anyone has any experience with installing a later model differential or carrier, into my 1942 10 bolt rear axle, I'd appreciate the advice. I'm open to nearly anything that allows me to keep my OE 6 lug artillery wheels. Has anyone installed a later model axle that allowed you to use the OE 41-46 6 lug wheels?

Are those wheels 6 on 7.25"? No other rear ends than 1 ton use that bolt pattern, I still have some of those wheels laying around.

Ed:

I believe the lighter 3/4 tons from 1942 used the 6 on 5.5 pattern, with 11 inch brakes. Doubtful I could use the larger components. But thanks for the input.
