I was trying to remove the transmission from the 1929 Chevrolet inline 6 the other day. I removed the 4 bolts and tried to back off the tranny. It did for about 1/16" and that's it. What could be holding it in? Maybe the clutch is frozen to it? Do I need to poor the WD and heat for a few years to get it out? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks for listen to me whine.

How long has it been sitting? If it moves slightly like you said, pilot bearing is probably OK, unless it is a roller bearing setup with crossed up rollers. The clutch disc could be rusted to the input shaft, or the throwout bearing could be rusted to the retainer. I presume the driveshaft has been removed?

Good luck,

Ed

Did you remove the top two bolts and install guide pins?

I am not sure how long it has been installed. I would at say at least 40 years. When I was trying to get it out. The tranny tilted to the right, right as you look at the motor from the rear. The clutch moved with it as well as the motor. I could hear compression from the motor when it did. Surprised the heck out of me. Last thing I expected was the motor to be free and not frozen. I had to remove the motor to get the drive shaft off. There was no slack in the drive ling like there should be. I will keep working on it. After a few years, lots of heat, lots of WD-40, I might get lucky and get it off.

Is the bottom of the clutch housing open for a peek? If it has been that long, wildlife could have been in there.

Yes, it had the usual mouse nest. I cleaned it out and I will start shooting WD-40 up from that direction to start soaking it. Hopefully some day it will break free.

If you have an inspection opening and the engine turns over, you could unbolt the pressure plate from the flywheel. That would leave just the pilot bearing to keep the transmission from coming loose. The pressure plate should then come out with the transmission.

I've never had good luck with WD40 as a penetrant for freeing up rusty stuff, I like Kroil and PB Blaster for that. Years of mice pee can weld things together...
