Did you put in a recessed firewall to get the rear clearance? I'm in process of putting my 49 burb body to frame and hanging sheetmetal back together but is unpainted with a lot of body work to go. Looks like you'll be driving for the fall show & shines, Congrats,

| | | | Anonymous Unregistered | Anonymous Unregistered | 49B, Thanks but fall is a bit early to have color on it and have it back among the living. As you know, taking one apart is easy and cheap. The reassembly is the exact opposite.
As to the firewall I opted to not recess it as being 6'7" I figured if I did anything it would be to push it out for more leg room. Forget chopping the top too. It turns out that I have plenty of room in the engine bay. I can pull the distributor without pulling the eng and still have room in the front even using the Long Style water pump.
Right now we are doing a complete assembly to ensure all the parts fit and the systems work. Just added the dual diaphragm booster and master cylinder tonight. Hope to have the rear brake cables in this weekend so I can re-shoe the rear brakes.
Once we get that done it gets it final body work, sandable primer, blocking and then color.

This looks like it's progressing great.
You're right about takin apart vs reassembly. Definitely not as easy as "reassembly is the reverse...etc." But yer doin a great job. Keep us posted. | | | | Anonymous Unregistered | Anonymous Unregistered | Thanks all. Glad you like the pictures. I hope to mount the grill and front bumper this weekend.
I am at the point that I need your help. I need clear pictures of your SBC 4 barrel throttle linkage hookup so I can see where my brackets go.
I also need vacuum hose routing information. Will I need one of those vacuum balls for my installation? I have one out on the donor I can pull if it is needed.
If you have something that will help please send me a message. | | | | Joined: Oct 2002 Posts: 4,066 Bolter | Bolter Joined: Oct 2002 Posts: 4,066 | I hate to ask but what is a vacuum ball? and where is it located,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,guess I had better stop while I am ahead...........Fred Redryder pixMy HotrodA veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard, or reserve - is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to The 'United States of America', for an amount of "up to and including my life."I am fighting cancer and I am winning the fight | Pain is part of life; misery is an option. | | | | Anonymous Unregistered | Anonymous Unregistered | Fred, I did not know what it was until recently myself. On most "post stovebolt" vehicles many systems run off vacuum and a means to retain some vacuum when the engine was off was necessary so they developed vacuum cans or balls. On late 70's mid 80's GMs there is a round plastic "ball" mounted in the engine compartment to which several vacuum lines may be connected. If my description is dead wrong then please someone correct me but this is the jist of the matter as it was told to me.
The only things I see on my truck that will use vacuum are: Transmission modular, Power brake booster, Distributor, and wiper motor (unless an electric option comes about). | | | | Joined: Sep 2004 Posts: 148 Member | Member Joined: Sep 2004 Posts: 148 | newer cars/trucks have them too. my 03 f150 has two vacuum canisters behind the battery.
