My old '51 recently stripped some teeth, apparently, and I'm in need of a new gear (which I've found at a few places) and from what I've been told, a new cam shaft would be in order, too. I don't want to put in a piece of junk for a shaft, so I'd like to know where anyone on this forum has found a quality shaft and gear for their 235. Although the engine is a 1956, I'm curious as to exactly what years of this engine have identical parts in this department. But also, and even better, would be someone leading me to a good set of gear/shaft for my truck. No Chinese junk, please. I don't want to have to do this again in the next 10 years. This is my daily driver. Thanks! Lee

Take your camshaft and send it to delta camshaft in Tacoma Wa for a regrind. Also if you have solid lifters, send them too, so they can machine the bottoms for the regrind, run you only about $150. They will also sell you a quality timing gear setup too. I have been using them for 40 years. Cam cores are getting scarce so they might not have an exchange necessitating you sending yours in.

Before tearing out the old cam I would check the lift of each lobe with a magnetic base dial indicator. If each gives a lift of 0.404 then it's not worn and if the lift is not down then the duration will be right also. We have a solid lifter with a push rod brazed to it to make checking easier than trying to work through the side cover opening.

Thanks guys! These ideas will help out, and I appreciate them. Thanks for the tip on delta cam, sstock.
