I saw a posting on Facebook. Someone was asking a question about locating a part for their AD GM truck. One person pointed out that GM was not an AD. GM is known as ND (New Design). Is this true? I have never heard or seen this reference before.

Almost, but GM means General Motors: GMC means General Motors Company

Advance-Design (A-D) 1947 - 1955 (first series 1955) Chevrolet trucks (a General Motors product)

New Design (ND) 1947-1955 (early 1955 Z series) General Motors Company (GMC) trucks (a General Motors product)

I thought I had heard that GMC was originally called the General Motors Truck and Coach Division.

From the Wikipedia:

"During the Second World War, GMC Truck produced 600,000 trucks for use by the United States Armed Forces. ... In 1943, GM purchased the remaining interest in YT&CMC and renamed it GMC Truck and Coach Division. In 1981, GMC Truck & Coach Division became part of GM Worldwide Truck & Bus Group."

So, back to the Advance Design/New Design subject. I have always understood that Advance Design was used by GM for their Chevrolet trucks (47 - 55), but I have never seen New Design used in print in reference to GMC trucks. In fact I was told that New Design was never actually used by GM, so I've always wondered where that originated.

That is an excellent observation/question, twotone

I cannot find an "official" reference to New Design GMC trucks.

I will try to remember to put a query on the oldGMCtrucks.com discussion board.
