For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2019 Posts: 5 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Sep 2019 Posts: 5 | My new 1950 3100 is stuck in 3rd gear. I started by reading a lot of verg good post here mostly involving linkage and shift box issues. I've made the adjustments per the manual.
I have disconnected both shift rods from the shift box and am still stuck in 3rd gear.
I am not stuck in two gears because I can drive the truck......carefully, in third. Clutch works fine. Put it on the lift. Held one rear tire from moving. A buddy rocked the other rear wheel back and forth while I snatched around on both shift levers ( still disconnected from shift box). Neither one will budge.
I'm about to pull off the side cover of the transmission where the shift rods enter and look for bent shift forks, or fouled up detent balls etc.
Since this is my first 3100 I thought I would seek the advice of those who have been there before me. Experience is a wonderful thing and I bet someone out there already knows what is wrong.
Thanks in advance for the help. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,795 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,795 | Unfortunately, that little transmission has a bad habit of getting "worn out all over worse than anywhere else!" Back when these vehicles were daily drivers, lots of Chevy parts departments kept brand new complete transmissions in stock- - - -it was usually less expensive to replace than it was to rebuild them. From your description of the problem, it sounds like the 2-3 synchronizer assembly is badly worn or has some broken pieces jamming it up. That part is very scarce, and also expensive when you do find one. I'd strongly suggest installing a "small parts kit" that contains all the bearings, thrust washers, and gaskets in the transmission, plus replacing whatever "hard parts" you find worn or damaged once you open it up. Make 2 or 3 more posts, and then send me a private message- - - -I just might have a simple solution to your problem. Jerry

Before disconnecting the driveshaft, be sure the truck is supported by jack stands at the frame, not the axle housing, as the weight of the truck on the springs will cause the torque tube to slam down with enough force to injure you.
