Today I finally got the corner windows installed, but now I have a minor problem. Because I had plastic taped over the opening for so long I have some serious residue from the masking tape. I tried taking it off with some soap and water, which didn't do anything. Then I tried mineral spirits, but again no luck. I really need to get rid of this stuff, but I'm afraid of damaging the paint.

Does anyone have a good suggestion?

Tim

I am currently digging back in to a 1953 3800 (one ton) with a nine foot bed. I've owned it since 1979, and drove it until 1982 (or so). My wife got me involved in restoring it back in 2002, got the body removed and the frame redone, then things came up. Now I am retired and starting again. If anyone is interested I have photos on Imagur ( https://timwhiteblues.imgur.com/ ). I live way back in the woods in the Ozarks on 40 acres at the end of a 2 1/2 mile private road.

WD-40. Spray it on generously, let it soak, tape residue will come right off. Doesn't hurt paint.

You can get real aggressive with stuff like lacquer thinner, acetone or starting fluid but you'd be risking paint damage. The WD is slower but doesn't hurt anything.

Maybe using some Goo Gone will work quicker?

If an employee in my shop is caught with WD40 I'd fire him and if a non-employee is caught I'd have to kill him. With high dollar paint jobs on the line one just can't have WD40, Armorall, or anything with silicone. One second of spray will cause one year of fish eyes. We use 3M adhesive remover.

Standard/original formula WD-40 contains no silicone.

WD-40 does sell a silicone lubricant.

Funny the things that trigger an old memory...A friend had an old convertible we decided to paint stripes on. Years of armor All on the top rad down on the paint and tape just fell off.We tried everything! He finally asked his wife for suggestions. She asked "did you try formula 409"? You could see him cringe that I heard her suggestion...Guess what finally made the masking tape stick.

Update on removing tape residue. I guess that tape had been on there so long (like a year in places) that it was permanent. After trying all suggestions I finally ended up using a razor blade to scrape it off, which tokk very little time. Then I went back a did some touch up painting, and now things look pretty good.
