So I finally gave up on my Rochester B carb and ordered a replacement equivalent. The main question I have is with all the gaskets I have, I'm not sure what is supposed to have a gasket and what is not? My main question is in between the intake and the carb insulator, is there supposed to be a gasket? I know there's a gasket between the carb insulator and the carb itself. If I put one between the intake and carb insulator, as well as the insulator and carb, there wasn't much thread for the nuts to thread on to, which leads me to believe there isn't supposed to be one between the intake and carb insulator. The other reason why I'm questioning it, is because when I put the carb insulator on the intake, it's not 100% flush and I'm worried there will be an air leak. Thank you in advance for your help! | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | Put a gasket between the carburetor and the insulator, orientating/aligning the "cut-out" in the gasket to a hole in the base of the carburetor.
I put a gasket between the insulator and the intake manifold. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,771 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,771 | You can probably unscrew the studs out of the intake manifold a couple of threads, as long as you reinstall them with red Loc Tite. That will probably give you just enough extra stud length to use a gasket on both sides of the insulator. It might not be absolutely necessary, but it probably won't hurt, either. Just be sure not to block any vacuum passages with the gasket(s).
If you remove the studs, you can also draw-file the top of the manifold or use a disc sander on it to be sure it's flat before re-installing the studs or putting longer ones in. Jerry

Was just wondering if anyone had any success with those Chinese carbs....Gotta beat the tariff increase! This includes 216, 235, 261, GMC, Chrysler Spitfire, Ply-Do, Ford 223, Pontiac 239, etc. There really is no universal replacement carburetor. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2012 Posts: 158 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2012 Posts: 158 | OK...so for my application the Rochester B & the Carter YF would be OEM carburetors, specific to the vehicle? - That is quite a list above..... | | |
