I know that they were originally made for 250s and 292s. Just inquiring for a friend. I'm not sure. You might richen up the main jet a little, but it would be a better choice to stick with the right carb for the engine. Jerry

I think he's looking to use what he has at this point to get the truck running. Thanks Jerry. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,792 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,792 | I did something similar when I was back in high school. I had a 47 Ford coupe with a flathead V8, bored 80 thousandths oversize. That turned a 239 cubic inch engine into a 252. I installed a 2-barrel carb for a 55 Ford 272, and got a horrible flat spot on acceleration. Even with drilled-out main jets and lousy gas mileage, the bog just off idle just wouldn't go away. I had to nurse the RPM up a little at a time to get up to the point I could nail the throttle. It ran pretty good once the engine was wound up, but getting there was a challenge! Jerry

Carburetion 101 - the three major methods of helping atomize fuel are: (A) heat, (B) higher air velocity, and (C) throw more fuel at the engine.
Carter released the 4371s for replacement on standard transmission 230, 250, and 292 engines. These "one size fit all carbs" are generally calibrated much richer than O.E. carbs (see "C" above).
It should work, albeit not as well as one designed specifically for the 235. And fuel mileage will probably not be good.
Jon. Good carburetion is fuelish hot airThe most expensive carburetor is the wrong one you attempt to modify. He may have to bite the bullet on poor fuel mileage with this carb for a while. | | |
