Ive searched around this forum and other places online and still have not seen a pic or definitive location on where the factory jack or tools were located. My truck is a ‘49 GMC 3/4 ton. I think i have the original jack because it seems to have the factory color of the truck on it but im not sure. Were there hold down brackets or something? If anyone has any pics of the jack storage and tools it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

As Craig posted:

Stored in the compartment under the seat cushion base (standard cab) or under-floor compartment (Panel, Suburban, and Canopy).

Tool Kit (tools in canvas case)
Jack & Handle

Since these were noisey and were relatively hard/inconvenient to get-to and to put-back, maybe that is why they are almost always missing?

I sometimes force myself to raise the lower seat just so that I can remember what the heck I hid under there. This post reminded me to go look and see. Bottle jack, lug wrench, extra rags....

How do you keep the jack and tools from sliding around and rattling?

I built 2 wooden boxes with dividers and notches cut in the top edge of one of them to hold a non-stock 4 way lug wrench and the crank for the jack. no rattles which I can hear above the rest of the rattles of my truck.

Yes, for the Military surplus canvas tool bags which all my rigs each have one. Yes the truck has it's bag under the seat. Not too much room under the seat so one learns to consolidate.

Canvas bags works for me, especially since I have someone here with a sewing machine.

But I have taken the topic off course slightly. The OP wanted to know how the tools were stored when the truck was originally delivered. It seems a bit of a mystery. I thought the owner's manual would explain how to change a tire and store the tools but it doesn't.

The first place i looked was in my original tattered owners manual. Had lots of good info but nothing about the jack or tools....so I googled around and looked on here and really didn’t find much of anything. I’ll make something work but i was just curious if there were factory hold downs or clamps for the jack and lug wrench. Thanks for the replies!

I also went thru all my truck books, etc and cannot find anything about original tool storage under the seat. Too bad they didn't elaborate more on this subject.

Were the trucks delivered to the dealer with the tool kit, or was that a dealer item?

592769 53 inch folding jack handle (to turn jack screw)
3682420 tire IRON for ALL (exc. 1/2 ton) (this part is also called out as a jack handle)
3682399 lug nut wrench 49/64 (aka 3/4 inch) 1937-50

from 1952 and 1959 parts catalogs:
3690652 3000 lb rated axle type w/ handle 1929-52
3719189 3300 lb rated axle type jack (might not include handle) 1929-58
592769 same 53 inch folding jack handle (to turn jack screw)
3682420 same tire IRON for ALL (exc. 1/2 ton)
3715608 newer part number for tire IRON
3692251 lug nut wrench 49/64 (this part is now called out as a jack handle instead of iron)

3710686, lug nut wrench 3/4, 1937-57, PASS, CORV, COMM, and 1958 PASS, CORV
this wrench is used in cars and up to at least 1963
the newer part number is also in 53-60 corvette
the prior part is in all passenger cars 1949-50 and doubles as jack handle

optional tool kit (regular equipment to 1949 only)
986362 tool kit with bag 1949-52
some wrenches are marked: McKAIG-HATCH Inc forged in USA
3 double open ended wrenches, sizes: 3/4-5/8, 9/16-1/2, 7/16-3/8
may have been a 4th wrench in early kits, 19/32-11/16
hammer is 10 oz ball peen <-- this is a slightly rare size for a small hammer, common sizes are 8 oz and 12 oz
screw driver is 5.25 inch shank, black round wooden handle, smooth metal collet, most incorrect wood handle screwdrivers have a lip on the forward edge of the metal collet
6 inch combination pliers, nickel plated
tool kit bag is cotton duck material, likely No. 6 weight or a bit heavier, probably not No. 1 or 2, brown color

optional tire pump
609304 ALL vehicles and years

Wow.... 2ManyTrucks just gave the whole rundown! Thank you for all that. I was just hoping someone had a random pic of a jack mounted in the truck with a tool or something....but you definitely nailed it. Thank you.

Jack info:

The master parts book says same part # for all 1/2 ton trucks from 1929-1955.

Commercial Jack {W/ folding handle}....
Part # 3690652 Gp.# 8.820 {3000 lb. capacity}

Commercial Jack folding handle by itself...
Part # 592769 Gp.# 8.820 .

Although GM used the same part # from 1929-1955.... I suspect that there were changes in the actual jack that was supplied along with the tool kit over that 26 year span.

There is also a listing for 1942-1955 Utility or "big truck" jack with a 7000 lb. capacity...
{I would think that these were used on all 1 1/2 ton & up trucks}.
Part # 609909 Gp.# 8.820

Is there a card inside that bag of tools? I was thinking something along the line of:

"Your GM dealer will be pleased to repair your truck after you damage it with this set of crude tools"

Sorry about the eBay links.

I think I provided several non-eBay links, but I am not interested in looking for them, again.

I would have been pleased to edit the eBay links out of the post, and, hosted/attached the photos.

Sorry - I will be more careful in the future.

They were held down by springs. Tight coiled springs (2) in either an "X", or in parallel to keep them strapped to the floor board. That's the only way I've ever seen them.
In fact my '64 has them too! smile

Chris

EDIT: OH wait. I just remembered. I've also seen a canvas apron across the back of the bench seat with pockets for everything. RPO? dunno. smile

At least the early 50's. Maybe earlier. I'll look, and see if I can find the RPO.

I am not asking about years that had tools - that was referenced above.

I am asking about the years "They were held down by springs. Tight coiled springs (2) in either an "X", or in parallel to keep them strapped to the floor board."

The first poster was asking about 1949 (GMC),

The earliest I can now remember, was a '48 chevy. It was under the seat on the drivers side.
I'm still looking for the "official" word on it, and looking at the '46, I found the tool list (see attached excerpt)

Yes, that is the tool list.

A list is shown in Advance-Design specifications manuals, and probably in other years (my post to Specifications Manuals was deleted because it also contained links to images of two types of tool-kits on eBay).

It would be nice to see a GM statement about the location, and, a statement of how/if the jack/handle was attached, especially 1947-2nd through 1955-st?

That information does not seem to be in any of the Specifications Manuals (the place you got your image), nor in Owner's Manuals.?

Thanks,

Still looking. But mostly yes (the specs). But I've acquired a bunch of other material over the years too. smile
FWIW the '47 4400, and 6400's came with "platform, and Toolbox".

I'll keep looking. smile

EDIT: '47 indicates

Tool bag | All Models. | Cotton duck material.

But that's as much as I've found. so far.

Oooh, the '48 came with a tissue dispenser! smile

I found this discussion both informative and interesting. But in my part of the country, before trucks became passenger cars, the jack is stored either on the cab floor or in the bed on top of the spare tire and any tools are in the glovebox, on the passenger floor or in a toolbox sliding around in the bed! They are easier to find/get to than any factory location. Just had to comment John

John,

Your preferred locations were most likely the prevailing locations "in the day".

That is most likely why the tools and jack/lever are missing.

OK. These pictures aren't the best indication. But give some idea of what I'm talking about. Apologies, they're under the drivers seat, and hard to get a any picture of. Let alone a good one. smile

When I got the truck. The Jack, Handle/Lug wrench, and tools, were "strapped" under the springs. They fit in perfectly arranged. Sorry it's so hard to tell from the pictures. frown
