I'm assembling the bed on my 53 one ton, and have a question about the metal bed strips. Do they go under the lip on the front panel? On my truck there doesn't seem to be enough room to get them under there. But they look odd sitting on top. I think they should end up sitting slightly above the wood, but there just doesn't seem to be any way to get them in there.

Advice is appreciated.

Tm

I am currently digging back in to a 1953 3800 (one ton) with a nine foot bed. I've owned it since 1979, and drove it until 1982 (or so). My wife got me involved in restoring it back in 2002, got the body removed and the frame redone, then things came up. Now I am retired and starting again. If anyone is interested I have photos on Imagur ( https://timwhiteblues.imgur.com/ ). I live way back in the woods in the Ozarks on 40 acres at the end of a 2 1/2 mile private road.

Can you post a pic? I know of no lip on the front panel. Maybe you don't have the front panel attached to the front crossmember correctly.
I just finished replacing my bed wood on my '50. No lip.

On the one ton the front panel doesn't attach to a cross member. It's just bolted to the two bed sides, with a long bolt that goes through the roll. The bed boards slide under the lip, which is the same height as the angle strips on the sides of the bed side. There are holes in the lip that line up with the last holes in the metal strips. I'll see if I have a photo that shows what I'm talking about.

The lip is actually two lips that make a sort of channel that the ends of the boards sit in. In the photo you can see that one of the boards is in place, and one of the metal strips is sitting on the lip.

Looking at photos of other trucks I think the front panel is unique to the one tons.

I hope that makes sense.

The strip goes underneath that front panel lip, Tim. It does on mine. 1951 GMC 1 ton. Your carriage bolt won’t be long enough if you place the strip on top.

Thanks Fox.

I finally re-viewed the video you posted, and found my answer!

Now I just have to figure out how to force the strips in there. At least I finally have all my boards painted. Three coats of 50/50 black enamel and paint thinner. Soaked n real good, and looks like an old truck bed. You can still faintly see the grain.

Next up: assembly!

Tim

You bet. My strips were snug too. I had to push with some authority to get them in, but I did not had to hammer them, a firm push was all.
