Wrestling with the power steering set up on the 70's Nova clip under the nose of my future '51 today. The present Saginaw box split while it sat in the PO's yard and rusted/froze the gears. To replace, I found another box (in another yard, but that's a long story...). I've tried to remove the ill-fitting Pitman arm on the replacement box with no luck, breaking the bolt on a cheap puller. Splines are presently soaking in PB Blaster and some light heat has been applied. Any other tricks you'd like to share? As always, thanks in advance for sharing your experience.

Should be a split in the pitman arm on the pinch-bolt side. Remove the bolt and use a thin chisel to help spread the pitman arm a little.(BE CAREFUL NOT TO SPREAD IT TOO MUCH OR IT WILL CRACK!).
it should be able to be wiggled/coerced off the gear-box.(should be real easy with a puller now)

Use the proper puller.
Last fall I was rebuilding the front end on a my 71 C-10, and I bent a couple cheap pullers that were in my garage.
The pitman arm wouldn't budge. Finally, after wrestling the darn thing a couple of hours, I went down to our local Auto Parts Store (Autozone). They rented me a Actual Pitmman Arm Puller. Took about 2 minutes with that thing. After I kicked myself in the _ _ _ :mad: for being stubborn earlier, I returned the puller.
Best thing is they give you your total money back. (They basically loan you the tool).
Good luck - but the proper puller will help (I think).

Checked on this with my local parts store. Sounds like they'll refund the deposited cost of the tool, less $5. Wish I had your deal with no rental fee. Considering the puller from Eastwood runs $21.99, I might just invest the $5 as a downpayment.

Yeah, we have a good deal with Autozone Parts Store here.
They loan you all sorts of tools to do the job. Another time I rented some coil spring compressors from them, then took them back. Actually, what they do is sell you the tool, if you don't take it back it is yours, but, if it's something you really don't use very often then you have the option of taking it back, for total refund. It's really a pretty good deal.

Yeah, I hear ya on the "proper tool for the job". that was preached to me all my life too, but sometimes I'm a little thick
