Sorry if this is pre-73, but I have a problem. I have a '01 chevy reg cab sportside 2WD with the 5.3 V8. Up till today, it was the fastest truck in town. Then I had the pleasure of having it rubbed in my face by 16 yr. old kid whose daddy just bought him a 2002 Fjord Lightning. Problem begins. I CANNOT allow a Fjord to be the fastest truck around. How could any chevy lover with a heart just turn away and allow it to happen? So my question is does anyone know who sells a nitrous setup for my pickup? I don't want a blower cuz I just want power on demand and they're too darn expensive. I just want to see the look on that little sh!ts face when the supposedly "gutless chevy" blows his doors off. Either that or build a very hot TBI 383 for the '46. But that won't happen for awhile.

The most know name in nitrous systems is NOS (Nitrous Oxide Systems) They are a division of Holley. Try this link: NOS Web Page

They have an On-Line catalog that's pretty good. You could probably find one of their distributors In a sizeable town like Saskatoon, but I'm only guessing.

One word of advice: Make sure the bottom end of you engine (pistons, bearings, crank, etc.) is bulletproof because, depending on the NO2 system you install, you could almost double your horsepower. By the way how's your tranny?

What are the rear end gear differences between the two trucks?
.Have you tried a K&N filter and a power chip?

Thanks guys. So far all I've done is added a K&N and 3 inch exhaust. Would the stock short block handle a 150 horse shot? I'm pretty sure I can get the necessary electronics that will help stop me from blowin' it up. Oh and I've got 3.73 limited slip, where I'm pretty sure a lightning has 3.55 limited slip (with 295/45's)

I think that the stock motor will handle a 150 shot if you do not use it frequently (daily). The cost for Nos kit is going to be in the $400 -$500 range. Then you will most likely want to get a remote bottle opener. Without the remote bottle opener you have manually open the bottle when you are planning on using it.
You should look into a supercharger. There are a bunch on ebay that you could get for a reduced price.

Astock engine should be able to handle 20 Hp. per cylinder after that, nothing but money to fix the problem, and hope your snot nosed buddy doesn't change the pulleys on his supercharger because you wont catch him...Sorry

No 16 year-old in a Lightning ever been known to keep it in one piece longer than eight weeks. He'll lose it and wreck it. Save your money. Just wait him out.

My 2001 had a 4:10 posi rear.makes a hell of a difference in the 1/4 mile.

the only way you can keep up is a LARGE shot of nitrous or if you fabricate a turbo system for your block, or if you go from a stop, and he can't drive well.

if he is stock he is putting around 350 hp and 420 ft.-lb's to the wheels. with a simple pulley change and a tune, he would be around 400 hp and 500 ft.-lbs. at the wheels. that is enough for a high 12 in the 1/4 mile.

get to work, but it is not going take just a simple nitrous install to beat him.

I agree with 1-ton. Nitrous is not for the faint at heart. If you do not set it up right, you will blow your engine. Also, a supercharger is rather inexpensive if you add up the price of filling your nitrous bottle often.

If you really want to beat him, get a vehicle that is not your daily driver, build a nitrous engine with the correct crank shaft, rods, pistons, cam shaft, heads, intake, and ignition system. It sucks having your daily driver broken down because your pride got the best of you.

Hopefully you are racing on a track. Street racing is not only dangerous and illegal, but it is one the most stupid thing you can do.

Hey, don't be too upset. Those Lightnings are giving Corvette and F-body owners fits too. GM had a version of their own before Fjord even thought of the Lightning...remember the Syclone and Typhoon trucks with the Buick Grand National Engine?

Most stock V8's can take about 125 hp of nitrous without any problems. Just don't get greedy and start turning it up above 200 hp, because it'll end up committing suicide. But yeah, a properly installed 125 hp shot, even maybe a 150 shot, should be okay. Check out Summit Racing.

As far as what the cylinder "sees", nitrous oxide is really no different than supercharging. That's why they call it the "chemical supercharger", and you're right, you can turn it on or off. You can probably get a decent system for under $500 bucks, maybe under $400. Or go to your local swap meet or E-bay and get it for even less.

search for a guy named parish. he has a reg. cab short bed chevy that runs low 11's on the factory LT street tires. it is a 4wd with a 406 cu. in. motor with off the shelf chevy heads (not sure which ones) and a large turbo. that is one sweet truck. it look completely stock except for under the hood.

nitrous is the cheapest up front, but you do have to refill the bottle a lot. if you do go with notrous, find a progressive controller, it will allow your motor to take a larger short because it is much easier on the motor.
