I have a 57 Chevy 6400 Forest service truck. I'm picking up a 1995 Chevy 2500 4x4 to do a frame swap. This 1995 has an automatic 700r4 or 4L60. I'm looking into swapping for a NV4500 trans. My question is, will swapping the old auto trans with a manual trans be a straight swap? Such as are they the same length from bell housing to the output shaft of the transfer case? Can I use the same drivelines or would I have to change those too? Will I have to move a cross member? | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,832 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,832 | You are probably not going to get many responses for swaps on trucks that big but you DON'T NEED any. Since you have both the 57 and 95 a tape measure will give most of the info needed. The engine should be a 305 or 350 and the auto trans a 4L80E. The NV4500 is a straight bolt up (remember a pilot bushing) but my NV uses a hydraulic throw out slave cylinder. I used the dual master cylinder from a 60-62 Chevy pickup to give both brake and clutch action. The short answer about interchangeability is to just plan on fabricating everything from cross members to clutch linkage. Anyone with that big a stable of vehicles needs MANY tools and the ability to use them.

I'd like a nv4500 but if I have to change all kinds of stuff like cross members, drive lines, etc I may just rebuild the auto trans. But if it all bolts up the same auto/manual then I can do that. If so, you are just building a 3/4T truck. Maybe you can spell it out more in depth. What do you want to do to the 2500 and what do you want to do to the 6400. One at a time.
Myself, I'm not sure what you are doing and what drivelines you are asking about. Not sure what motor. Not sure if you really mean a frame swap. It sounds a little like a chassis swap. To some folks, it's the same. To some it's not.

I have a 1957 Chevy 6400 truck. In a few days I'm getting a 1995 Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4. I'm going to be taking the old 57 body and placing it on the 1995 frame/chassis. The 1995 has an automatic that is bad. I'm thinking about putting a manual nv4500 in its place. My question is, is the length from the bell housing to the transfer case the same on both setups? The case on the automatic longer and the cross member is in a different location. The frame on the 93 and 95 are the same, you can always slide the cross member forward. Your drive shaft length front and rear would change as well.
