I've got a question about assembling the gear shift control, but first the specifics. The truck is a 1953 Chevy 3100 with the original 3 speed transmission and column shifter. The FAM does not show my exact application, but does show one that is close. I've included a close up of that page. The drawing shows the following parts in order of assembly as the crank, followed by the spring, a washer and the lock. Based on the drawing, I think I have the crank oriented correctly on the shaft and based on the wear ring on the crank, it appears that the cone shaped spring goes on with the small side against the crank. My question revolves around the lock. It appears as though the lock (it's a washer really) rides in the groove cut into the shaft and is only held in place by the tension created by the spring. Is that correct? If not, how is it secured to the shaft? As it sits now, it looks like a good bump in the road could cause it to come off. I'm including some pics to show the order of assembly and how it looks on the bell housing. As always, thanks in advance for your help.
Looking at your third photo, the "washer" to which you refer, needs to be bent downward slightly to keep it from falling off. You can simply hit the raised pimple on the left side of the "washer" with a small hammer until the top of the pimple is level with the end of the shaft. Carl
