The instructions are for installing it normally. It basically says to "mount in opposite fashion..." no real detail. I was wondering other than making sure the perch is mounted squarely and the shock mount is perpandicular to the axle, what else should I mind, helpful tips, and any info some of you more expierianced guys may be able to lend?

My stock 10-bolt rear end (55 1st series) had perches with definite taper because the springs aren't perfectly parallel. The 14 bolt I put in had a similar taper to the perches. It all seems easy enough I just always seem to run into the "rare problems" when I do stuff on autos...

Those spring perches...just make sure they follow the same line/angle of your springs. Then there is the driveshaft angle which is more critical. Driveshafts work best with angles that are similar at both the differential and transmission. And the angle can only be so many degrees. This driveshaft angle stuff ties in with the installation of the perches...you got to have those driveline angles right before you weld. I found a lot of stuff on the internet simply by using a search engine such as Altavista...simply type in "driveshaft". If you can't find what you are looking for I have internet reference material at home from when I changed out my rear axle. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 1,586 Extreme Gabster | | Extreme Gabster Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 1,586 | I've done 2 rear axle swaps on my own trucks, a 37 and a 51, both have non parallel rear leaf springs.I used over the counter Mopar spring pads and slightly modified S10- lower U bolt plates.Installed the pads on as they were,no problem at all with the angled springs, the U bolt spacing is wide enough to clear the slight angle of the springs.It's best to set up the axle before welding the pads,check out the pinion angle,then weld. You just have to firmly tack weld the pads,no real need for intense welding that may warp the axle tubes unless you have 450 HP. | | |
