Excuse me if this is a really newbie question but heck, you can't learn if you don't ask.
Should you lubricate nuts when you are reassembling and how does that affect torque specs? I know that some things need anti-seize compound but as a general practice, should you grease it up before you torque it down?

That is a good question. Here is my opinion.
Header bolts and any bolt connected with the exhaust you should use anti-seize. Bolts that go into a water jacket should be coated with some blue silicone (RTV) on the threads. As far as bolts like cam gear bolts, balancer pulley bolts, fan bolts, converter bolts, flywheel bolts, it is a good idea to put at least Loctite blue on them to help keep them from backing out. As far as oiling the threads on other bolts.. I think that you can probably skip that. The best thing to do is get some thread chasers to clean up the bolt holes before you put bolts back in them..

John: I agree anything heat related (exhaust) I use anti-sieze we have used it for years on our 250 hp 375 deg. boilers works like a charm. Kinda got away from using Loctite blue using red more often.

If you really need to oil a bolt I've been using 00 Grease in quart seems like it works better for me. popcorn The Truth is Out There (68Bus Hope this helps, remember you might have to take it apart someday)

I was told to put a drop of oil under the head bolts when torquing down the head. The oil keeps the bolt from binding up and you get a better torque reading.

Bottom line is that a fastener such as a bolt must have the proper elongation within its elastic deformation range to provide the proper clamping force. In our refinery, the mechanical folks use an extensometer in critical service to measure this extension, thus ensuring the proper fastening force is in place. Torquing attempts to do the same but is subject factors that can negatively affect the target fastening force. Some of these factors have already been mentioned...messed up threads, friction between the head of the bolt and the surface that the force is being applied to, etc. Anything that can be done to minimize these friction forces such as lubing threads, cleaning threads, etc. will help ensure the torque method provides adequate fastening force. Hope this wasn't too technical.
