For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 510 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 510 | I've got a 64 C10 ( UglyTruck I ) that I originally bought as a winter beater. I've decided that I like the truck so much I'm gonna "fix it up." Actually the plan is to turn it into a rat rod...sorta. Anyway, I found a good deal on another truck ( Ugly Truck II ) which is a 74 C10 with 454 and TH400. The motor and trans will go into a different project (The big block will probably end up powering my race car on the salt flats) but I plan to use the front suspension, brakes and power steering on Ugly Truck I. I had hoped to use the rear end (I'm not sure if UT II has posi or not, but I bleeve it's a 3.08 gear, where UT I has a 4.10 or so.) I'm keepin the 292 I6 and SM420, but hoppin it up a little (AFB carb, headers, etc.) so I could pull a higher gear. Problem is, the 64 is coil spring rear suspension and the 74 is leaf. Therein lies my dilemma. I suppose I could swap the center section and axles, but I'm not a rear end guy (I prefer breasts, myself) and a bolt-in solution would be better. Question is, can the leaf spring setup be adapted to the 64's frame easily or would it be simpler to take both rear ends to a shop and have them swap the guts so that I have a 3.08 posi with 5-bolt axles? I'll check 'em out, but I'm not exactly sure what you're saying. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 132 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 132 | well,if ya look under the 64, you'll see the track rod and why you need the saddles(perches). not sure where you live but get the U-bolts,too. you'll prolly have to beat the kitty ltter out of 'em to drive them thru the control arms...

Well, I just checked and I live 506 miles west of you in a suburb of Salt Lake City. I checked out the Early Classic site and ordered a catalog. I understand about the track rod...but I don't know whether the best approach is to try to adapt the leaf spring rear end to use the coil springs or to try to convert to a leaf spring setup. I've changed plenty of coil spring rear ends (on cars) and I understand all the crap that builds up in there. Not the cleanest job in the world...and I've got to do it in my 80 El Camino, cuz the 2.73 peg leg is broke and I have a 3.73 posi to go in it...as soon as the snow goes away. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2002 Posts: 96 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2002 Posts: 96 | Ray you web page is pretty amazing mate. Well done. Your history of your Elky build was great. Thanks, Pete. I've had a lotta fun workin on the cars/trucks and I don't see it stoppin anytime soon (unless I stop suddenly, I guess.) The Elky has a busted rear end (2.73 peg leg.) I guess the racin at Mo-Kan last year was more than it wanted to put up with. So I have a 3.73 posi out of an 87 Monte Carlo SS ready to install (along with a TH200-4R trans) as soon as this damned snow melts. The garage is occupied by a race car, so I gotta do my truck work outside...at least for now. Next time I'm down under I'll come look ya up. I dunno if you do any of the hotrod cruises or the salt flat racin thing, but if so, we may end up crossin paths. Drop me a note if ya wanna visit a little bit. | | |
