Is there any way of getting the gasket in there without removing the vent assembly. It looks like a royal pain to remove that vent assembly but I have no idea, maybe it's not that tough?

| | | | | Joined: Apr 2017 Posts: 480 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2017 Posts: 480 | I installed the cowl vent gasket in my 53 one ton without removing the vent. It took a bit of tugging to get it around the back corners, but it went in pretty easily all in all. The tricky part was getting the weather stripping cement in. I ran a bead in the back lip before putting in the gasket, then lifted the rest of the gasket a bit at a time and squirted in the adhesive. Came out pretty good, although there was some cleanup involved afterwards.

I am currently digging back in to a 1953 3800 (one ton) with a nine foot bed. I've owned it since 1979, and drove it until 1982 (or so). My wife got me involved in restoring it back in 2002, got the body removed and the frame redone, then things came up. Now I am retired and starting again. If anyone is interested I have photos on Imagur ( https://timwhiteblues.imgur.com/ ). I live way back in the woods in the Ozarks on 40 acres at the end of a 2 1/2 mile private road. Tim

It seems you can remove 4 small carriage bolts and the lid comes off with the exception of the center brace. Looks like I can tilt the lid forward to apply the cleaning/glue/gasket easily. Broke all 4 carriage bolts though.

2) If you don't remove the vent, use a plastic tool to protect the paint and tuck in the gasket
3) To prevent a glue-y mess, use masking tape around the area before applying glue
4) More paint protection? Use tape when doing tip #2.
5) I don't plan on ever opening my vent, I have AC. I used the rubber gasket = leaks. The foam gasket seems to never leak. | | |
