Hello everyone:

I need some help with a fuel pump. I have a '53 235 engine with a dual action fuel / vacuum pump. Has anyone ever rebuilt one? Is this something that can be done with simple tools or do you need specialized tools and equipment? Does anyone know of a good rebuild service I could use?

Have done... OE AC 9797 pump. It takes care and patience, but no special tools needed, just some good, practical knowledge. The '54 shop manual covers the rebuild pretty well (and applies to the '53): Fuel Pump. Disassembly/reassembly starts on page 6-71. I suggest reading through to see if you are comfortable doing what it describes.

I like the kits Hal Houghton sells: AC Fuel Pump Kits. Although they are a bit pricy, his materials are good, and ethanol compatible. The only downside of his kit is that the diaphragm needs to be assembled using the original metal bits. Some kits from other suppliers come with that already done, but I don't know the quality of materials used. I'm sure some are fine, but I would want to thoroughly check that out.

Hal will also rebuild pumps (or pre-assemble the diaphragm for $10 if you send him your old one).

Chevs of the 40s and Jim Carter used to sell rebuilt units (you sent your core/unit for rebuild, or sent the core/unit to save the core charge).
