Read an interesting post several days ago about number of filters. If using just one filter, where in the line should it be located? Also, what would be the correct micron size for the filter media?

The carburetor is the part that's most affected by dirty fuel, so it should be logical to put as fine a strainer as possible as close to the carb as possible. They're butt-ugly and not period-correct, but the metal canister inline filters about 2" in diameter do the best job of cleaning up the gas. The little clear plastic ones about an inch in diameter are virtually worthless. The glass bowl filters with the ceramic filter element in them are period-correct, and they do a pretty good job of keeping the fuel clean. Just don't over-tighten the clamp nut and distort the bowl gasket and/or crack the glass.

The problem that causes some people to put a glass-bowl (or, other style) fuel filter on the input or output side of the fuel pump is: when changing the fuel filter that it mounted on the carburetor input port, it is hard to avoid dripping gasoline on engine parts when removing the glass bowl.

I have the glass bowl at the carb with the original type filter element (not folded paper). As this will be an unrestored ( except for safety items) aka “barn find”, a little gas might clean off some of the grime. Thanks.

My 39 has the gas tank under your butt, er seat. I installed a glass sediment bowl filter that has a built in shut off valve where the shut off valve use to come out of the bottom of the gas tank. I clean it out periodically. The glass bowl stays clean on the fuel pump and so does the carburetor.

My Rochester Monojet carb has a screw-in filter (Fram G 3427) but I also use an in-line filter between the tank and the fuel pump.

Are there any other carbs that have screw-in filters?

Interesting Wally. The only things are: 1. You can’t “hard line” from the fuel pump to the carb/filter and 2. The filter only fits Fords according to the attached chart. I have no idea if the large nut where the fuel line plumbs into the carb are the same. The only thing I know about Fords is how to spell Ford.

What do you mean you can't hard line? I put an aftermarket glass bowl filter on my carb, and I believe it came with old-style instructions on how to rebend the hard line to fit, if that's what you're referring to.

I was referring to Wally’s post and link. It shows a filter with a hose barb. Take a look 👀. I know of no way to hard line to a hose barb.

FWIW, if a hard-line connected small filter at the carb is desired, This One replaces the 5/16" tubing inverted flare inlet fitting that is common on the Rochester B/BC or replacement carbs. Inlet is 1/2-20 thread (inverted flare), outlet is 1/8-27 NPT. It's a fairly compact filter at just over an inch in diameter and just under 2" in length. Wix PN 33081 is the same as NAPA Gold PN Fil 3081. O'Reilly's and other FLAPS usually carry the Wix part. Just another option...

This is the type of filter I installed. I can't remember where I ordered it from, but I prefer the look over other styles.
