The GMC (228, 248, 270, 302) 6 cylinder engines are longer than the 216/235/261 Chevrolet engines.

Maybe someone knows how to mount the shorter engine in a GMC?

Most people just bolt a piece of steel plate to the front crossmember to move the motor mount back. Putting a GMC engine in a Chevy truck is the hard way- - - -gotta move the radiator forward, etc.

There is no such thing as a GMC 235. You might have a 228, a 248, or maybe a 270. Look at the stamped number behind the distributor- - - -the first three digits are the engine size.

Of course some Canadian GMC models did come with 235s... and 216s. Just saying. To use those USA designed engines probably required a different front crossmember.
But you said it's a USA truck. So it came with a 228, 248 or 270... and thus the need for the adapter plate. Or swap crossmembers from a Chevy. Tim or somebody has a good graphic showing the differences in the crossmembers. Tim?

"1952 gmc truck . . . was bought new in california."

" . . bought a chev [235] rebuilt out of a 56 chev . . " : USA or Canadian 1956 Chevrolet?

"have any of you seen a gmc 235 for sale." : A Canadian GMC 235 for sale?

Frank50 is on the right path/trail, as is Jerry.

The frame cross-members comparison photo from Rob English (oldGMCtrucks.com) is attached, below.
