Good score! At the moment, I've got three of them stashed away, and a friend says he knows where several more are in an old salvage yard for big trucks near his home. Road trip!!!!!!!!!

Edit: One of those 261's is going to get the big-stroke treatment. A set of NASCAR tool steel connecting rods I just bought on an Ebay auction will allow me to run a 4.375" stroke. With standard-bore 261 pistons (3 3/4" bore) the bore and stroke figures out to 290 cubic inches. A 30 overbore would bring it up to 301! All that from an engine that's hard to tell from a 235 unless somebody knows exactly where to look!

Nice find, Steve. Looking good! Is it going in your '53 or another project?

Jerry, you'll have to tell us more about the crank and rods for your stroker! That's another good one.

They're Carillo tool steel NASCAR rods 6.4" long with a 1.875" rod bearing. That allows me to stroke the crankshaft to 4 3/8" with just a little material to spare to make sure the rod journal ends up round. That's 1/4" more stroke potential than when using the 292 connecting rod. It will take a little bushing work on the wrist pin hole in the piston, and a wrist pin for a Harley-Davidson motorcycle to make everything on the bottom end play nicely together, and just a little material decked off the cylinder head surface of the block. I'm shooting for a 9.5:1 compression ratio. Torque monster!

Steve: have you had a chance to measure the bores? Is there much wear or ridge at the top?

Neat!!! I can't see the oil lines from the filter very well but they don't look like the full-flow lines on my 261. Did they make 261's with a bypass filter?

Good score!!!

Later-model 261's could be set up for either bypass or full flow oil filters. Of course, the best option is to use both- - - -full flow to strain out the rocks, marbles, and bowling balls, and a bypass filter to do a good job of cleaning up the oil!

Jerry - nice plan. So 235/261 crank, offset reground. Cool!

Tom, no ridge at all in any of the bores, after talking to a few stovebolters and doing some careful measuring, I will more than likely ball hone it and re ring it with the stock pistons.
Probably will be resting in the mounts in my 53 this summer.
Wally this came out of a 62 C60 and it has been in bypass mode the entire time, maybe it was a rpo to have it either way?
Others might know.

Dad was doing the offset-grind thing back in the early 1950's- - - - -49 Mercury 4" stroke crankshaft ground to 85 HP rod journal size to a 4 1/8" stroke, combined with a .250" overbore- - - - -around 300 cubic inches from a 239 Ford engine, 11:1 compression, and alcohol and Hydrogen Peroxide for fuel! We also built a lot of 3 9/16" stroker Chevy 350's back in the late 1970's with 283 connecting rods.
