A friend of mine has a '64 K-10 4X4 with the rare 3-Speed Trans. His Transfer Case is making noise and popped out of gear the other day. Trying to find out what could possibly be wrong with it. What does it sound like to you all? A member from another board suggested this place for parts. Seems like a pretty good place:

Any helpful info would be appreciated.

Bought parts for my transfer case from torque king. Worked out fine. I can’t speak to what the problem might be but it might be the same issue any transmission that jumps out of gear. Others will have ideas. He has checked the physical linkages from the cab to the case?
Is it the original t221 transfer case?

He has thoroughly checked the linkage and it did check out fine. The truck is pretty original and we believe it has the original case. The problem seems to be on the inside for sure and I'm going to suggest that he buys a manual from Torque King for starters.

Good to hear more good things about them.

If linkage is in fact moving the Xfer case levers into full position, then check motor mounts. Loose motor mounts can cause this. All this must be checked carefully because removing and rebuilding a T221 is difficult and expensive. If it is a divorced case it is probably a Rockwell/Timken T221. Of course it has a tag or you can post a pic if you want to know. Even a screwed up shift boot could do this. Since it is not your truck, your info to us is second hand. Very hard for us to advise with that type of info.

As HB indicates, be sure it's not the tranny slipping out, be sure all mounts for motor, tranny and xfer case are not broken or loose. The reason we are emphasizing this is the xfer cases get VERY little use/mileage (usually) and last a long time if properly lubed.

The three speed is not considered rare. It was standard. The 4 speed was an option.

An inspection would include taking off all three drive shafts and turning transfer case by hand to detect the noise. If you don't hear anything, it still could be bad bearings under load. If it is actually making noise, do not run it anymore. Extra damage can be done. I assumed the oil level was checked. Is your friend mechanically inclined? With automotive? Is this truck new to him?

I have parts of the manual and may be able to figure a way to link or post. Dont need to buy. I noticed my shift lever was also bend at one point and makes contact with the transmission hump when in 2 wd position. Have him make sure lever in cab is free to full throw.
Where is this case located? I am not qualified to rebuild others but i did do mine with the help of a friend. If close i might be able to help remove from the truck and put on the bench if it comes to that. The first step would be to remove top cover and take a look inside and that is pretty easy once you get it off your chest and up on the bench.

Oil Level was checked. I mentioned Motor Mounts to him and he says they are new, but he is going to re-check them anyway. He is actually an Old School 50 Year Mechanic and has plenty of experience, but no experience with this particular Transfer Case. The truck has been in his family for about 35 years and is totally restored. The Transfer Case problem is the first time it ever gave him any trouble.

Appreciate the info. Will pass it on to him.

PM on the way.

Turned out to be just a bad Bearing. With Hambone's help with the diagrams he was able to figure out the problem and bought the Bearing local. It's now installed and road tested. Working just fine again.

Thanks y'all.
