Is all Dextron 2,Dextron 3, created the same? I know newer vehicles use a Dextron/mercron 6.

So my question would be is quacker state , penzoil, valvoline,stp dextron all the same, or is one better than the other.

Any thoughts on this?

Dexron III is the current spec for older GM transmissions. It covers all the older Dexron specs. Dexron VI is a lower viscosity fluid, designed for modern transmissions.

Any name brand will do, so long as it meets the Dexron III spec. I have a preference for Mobil and Valvoline products, if I'm not using synthetics (I use Red Line Oil products in newer vehicles, mostly because that's what I have in my shop for a range of older to newer BMWs I work on), but that's just a personal preference.

The use of Dexron VI in place of Dexron III.

Recommendation/Instructions:
Dexron VI can be used in any proportion in past model vehicle equipped with a automatic transmission/transaxle in place of Dexron III i.e. topping off the fluid in the event of a repair or fluid change. Dexron VI is also compatible with any former version of Dexron for use in automatic transmissions/transaxles.

Dexron III must not be used in place of Dexron VI in models that specifically call for the use of Dexron VI, fluid and component life will be compromised.

DO NOT use Dexron VI in place of CVT fluid or in any component that does not specifically call for the use of Dexron III (or any former version of Dexron).

Dextrin III (3) is what Gene Berck at Restoration Hydra-Matics told me to put in the 1954 Hydra-Matic he rebuilt for me several years ago. It was recommended for all old Hydra-Matics, and for military and for BIG GMC “exotic” Hydra-Matics.

Thanks guys, I have a leak on a 350 turbo transmission. Not sure if the pan gasket or the seal on the shifter shaft. The fluid and filter need to be changed anyway so just was wondering about different brands because the prices are all over the place.. I found valvolene at wallyworld, for $13.99 a gallon. That was 8 dollars cheaper than at local flaps for a gallon of stp transmission fluid.
