The bolt-on oil filter can won't drain readily when I'm doing an oil change...Do these clog with sludge and need to be cleaned out periodically?
This is on a '55 Chevy 6 Cylinder....
Any ideas??

Is it a bypass canister?

When I was cleaning mine up before installing on my 261, a fellow Stovebolt member took the top off the canister and showed me a very small pinhole at the top of the center "tube" inside the canister. It is the drain hole that the oil runs through to drain back down into the crankcase. If it's plugged up, the oil won't drain. Might be worth a check.
I used carb cleaner and a small pipe cleaner to scrub clean, and use a rifle cleaning kit to clean the inside of the tube before using. Worked pretty well.

This thread has a couple of pictures that show it...

I have an old Fram canister bypass filter on my '38. Because it won't fully drain due to the hole in the stand pipe being toward the top it has a drain on the bottom with a 1/8 NPT plug. If your canister doesn't have a drain you can use a turkey baster to suck the oil out. Word of caution, buy one of your own. Wives get very upset if you use THEIR baster for that. grin

It's a very simple modification to install a drain fitting into the housing. Get a 1/8" NPT pipe coupling, cut it in half, and braze one piece to the housing near the bottom. Then drill a hole through the fitting into the canister, and install a 1/8" NPT plug. Next oil change, just pull the plug.

Thanks for great replies!
SB forum saves my ignorant self once again!
I sucked oil out, checked the little drain hole for open ness, and I'm on my way!
I though it drained at bottom and was stuck.

If it is a Fram Filter, this Sludge Siphon was used "in the day" (or, a roasted turkey "juice" baster was used).
