Need to know the PTO that fits a Spicer 5553a trans. Thought I had one, when I opened the cover, the trans. PTO drive gear sits 3.187" to the root of the gear, much deeper than the PTO I have. If anyone has a PTO that has the drive gear sticking out about 3", please let me know.

Thanks, Ed

I think I saw one on a GMC 2 ton in a local junk yard. The 5 speed Spicer doesn't mount to a cross member, right?

Spicer transmissions were not that popular in the '50s. There really are no catalogs available that I know about. I have several PTOs, but they all came off of either Clark or New Process. I think you will have to find a transmission which is known to be a Spicer and has a PTO on it. We used PTOs back in the '50s to pump off gasoline. It was complicated then and has gotten really tough after 60 years.

I seem to remember that there's an adapter gearbox that fits between the transmission and the PTO on some applications. Then a more conventional PTO box will bolt up. You might want to contact Jasper engine and transmission exchange in Jasper Indiana. They have been in the heavy duty transmission rebuilding business for decades, and they just might have the information you need, and possibly the right adapter.

I have 2 trucks with the 5 speed and 3 PTO's between the 2. If someone could educate me on the identification I'd be more than happy to let go of one. I'm not planning on using any of them. For some reason I think one has the Spicer but honestly I have no idea.

Reverse is upper left on one. I have no idea on the other because it's not running and the knob is missing.

I have no idea what the ID numbers are.

Spicer transmissions usually have an aluminum tag on left side of case at top right.
The model numbers from those tags will be much more useful in identifying than casting numbers. Same case could have many different gear sets in it, which may or may not affect PTO selection.

Well, I found what I need to reach far into the gearbox to engage the PTO gear to drive my PTO box. It takes an idler gear in between, Chelsea PN 328530-1x. They also are used on some Mack trans.' The distance from PTO mounting surface to root of trans. drive gear is 3.285"
