I got the rear wheels off my ‘54 4400 last night to figure out what was leaking. After getting everything off, it looks like it’s the seal. This rear end is from a C60 from what I’ve been told. My question is, what kind of wheels are these? I’ve looked at pictures and old drawings from a book and cross sections but can’t definitively pin them down. Any help would be appreciated.

The bolt pattern is the common GM 5/10. Started early(late '50's) tubeless tires, hard to find, many installed on farm trucks.

These have tubes. Definitely not tubeless. I found a guy about 35-40 minutes from me that will change tube type tires. The fronts were stock lock ring that he said he was good with. I’m not sure what these are. They are a different style than the front. This guy will change lock ring wheels but not RH5 which he says are the real widow makers. Just trying to figure out what they are while I’ve got them off.

Maybe you could send the pictures to your tire guy and he could ID them, at least tell you in advance if he will work on them.

I changed the fronts on my truck, Dayton cast spoke wheels. I used great care and a 25 foot long inflation hose with a remote valve and gage. Inflated them 10 psi, then deflate, then 20 psi, then deflate, etc up to 70 psi. Tire laying flat in the open, me behind a stout post. Had no choice, we were out in the middle of North Dakota, 500 miles from home and the old tires were 50 years old.

Hy ticketman186, I can't identify the brand of wheels in your pictures, but they are a type of multi-piece wheel, they are one of the three piece designs, solid wheel, solid bead ring, split keystone ring which lock the three pieces together when the tire is mounted and inflated, The wheels in your pictures are definitely not the RH5 "widow makers", and any competent tireman should feel comfortable working on them, hope that helps.

3B,
Thank you for the confirmation that they are not the RH5. I’ve got the new seal on order and will hopefully have it back on the road soon.
