Hy Noonan, your hood badge and fender badge are correct for a Canadian 1955 second series truck, a 1600 series is rated as a 2 to 3 ton truck in the parts books. If you would post the serial number I could tell you what the equivalent American model would be. Could you also tell us where in Canada you are, Canada is a very large country.
I am from Northern, Sk. Lac LaRonge area.. The truck is from southern, Saskatchewan. I've been everywhere man ! I would be very curious to see what you can tell me from the serial # although not sure about posting it for everyone to see ! Thanks for the reply
3B I came across a 1957 GMC 9700 today and was really hoping that it was a 1.5 ton that I could snag some rims off of that aren't grenades although from my research so far the 1957 GMC 9700 was a 1/2 ton ?? Once again things may be different for Canada. Also from the photos the front rims are a 6 bolt so not even close to the 1955 1600.
I could definitely see the front of my 55 sitting pretty with a 1957 grill and trim assembly.
Noonan, I believe you will find that the grill on a 1/2, 3/4, or 1 ton are all narrower than yours. The big bolts use the same cab and hood as the smaller ones but, grill and fenders are wider.
Hi Cuda ! Yes i see what you are saying although it is quite difficult to differentiate things from the photos. I will go take a look at the truck and take and see just what is there, and what is holding it up off the ground. This guy has a pile of old trucks kicking around something useful might pop up. Thanks eh !
Hy Noonan, A 1957 Canadian GMC 9700 is a 3 ton truck, that is the second to largest GMC truck which has a Chevrolet counterpart in Canada. Being a GMC it will have a totally different grill assembly than a Chevrolet. Just for your info a Canadian GMC half ton would be a 9300 series, hope that helps.
Was at the salvage yard today checked out the 57 gmc 9700.. I was really pleased to see that all of the rims were 20' and did in fact have a locking ring design which was really really good to see. The 2 speed rear (eaton?} had the electronic activator. I picked up the complete front beam with wheels, and rear diff with all the 6 bolt wheels at a reasonable price. This will hopefully all fit under the 55 chevy 1600 very nicely. That or blend the components together to be able to run the 6 bolt wheels !!
