PU 3100 foot engage parking break won't stay engaged. Push the foot brake pedal, brake engages, then remove my foot and the pedal releases without pulling release handle. Had been working fine. Any suggestions to keep the parking brake engaged until I pull the release handle? Perhaps the flat bar that locks against the pedal rod had rounded edges in the hole the rod goes through? 4.603 LOCKDo you have 4.597 SPRING? | | | | | Joined: May 2011 Posts: 18 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: May 2011 Posts: 18 | Do have the 4.597 Spring and 4.603 lock. I'll check the flat bar that locks against the pedal rod. Remove that rod and see if the brake will lock. Carl

The brake release rod on my truck is free and travels back and forth moving the 4.603 lock bar. The flat bar that locks against the pedal rod appears and the hole the pedal rod goes through appear to be normal. No abnormal wear, etc. Tex Chev | | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,303 Renaissance Man | | Renaissance Man Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,303 | 52 Carl, do you mean by "bound" that the brake release rod cannon be moved? The brake release rod on my truck is free and travels back and forth moving the 4.603 lock bar. Thanks, Tex Chev Does the release rod allow the lock bar to fully move to the locked position? Removing the release rod will confirm this. Carl

Reply to TCLederman -After looking more closely at the hole through the lock bar that locks against the pedal rod appears that probably is the problem. Any suggestions on how to modify or rework that hole so it will engage and hold the pedal rod? Should I make the hole more oblong or elongated? | | | | | Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 899 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 899 | So you have disconnected the release bar and the lock bar still does not engage?

These cannot be the same spring? I am referring to the link provided by TexChev I have found the 4.597 spring online to purchase but it looks like the one that I have on the bar 4.603 and I have not found one that looks like the right one to go on the release rod? My brake holds sometimes but not always I assume this spring would fix that. I may just go to my local ACE Hardware and try out several different springs that fit over the release rod? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,303 Renaissance Man | | Renaissance Man Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,303 | I noticed that part number duplication too. It must be a typo.

The ones you need are: p/n 3695565, locking, 13/16 ID x 1 1/8 long. and p/n 3687152, anti-rattle, 9/16 OD, 4 coils. I measured the ones on my 49 3100 and those are approximately the sizes of my springs. Hope this helps. The Old online Chevy Manuals website has a wealth of information!

Installed one on the release bar working great now. The one I used is smaller diameter but about 1-1/8" long. | | | | | Joined: May 2011 Posts: 18 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: May 2011 Posts: 18 | Forty 9 wrote; So you have disconnected the release bar and the lock bar still does not engage?
I have. Have talked to a 51 owner who says the hole in the lock bar can become worn and his solution is to change the angle where the lock bar engages the brake. Haven't tried it yet but definitely on my list of things to attempt. Appreciate all the info. and one I solve the issue will post what I've done. Thanks again and regards, Tex Chev 51 | | |
