On my '49 Chevy 3100 1/2 ton the part in the picture was under the bed and attached to an angle iron brace spanning between the frame members. It is obviously cut off. What function did it serve and what is it called?

Spare tire carrier piece. Too light of metal for part of a trailer hitch.

Does not match spare tire carriers on Ebay. If it was attached to an add-on/non original "angle iron" cross member, it's not original. Also depends on where under the bed. Front middle rear. And what direction the cut off was facing. Except for light construction as Martin said, I would have guessed trailer hitch. But the part has unique, era correct form.

Joe, as Carl confirmed and was said by others, It's the slider. It's a piece of what is sometimes called the "track", for the carrier.. Not shown in the Ebay pics.
