I think it depends on what look you're going for, and whether you're trying to be original. Here's a picture of mine with Goodyear Wrangler HT LT215/85R-16 tires on 16" wheels with 3-3/4" backspacing.

I just went through the tire size thing with my '51 GMC 1/2 ton. 215/85/16 are perfect in my opinion.
