Ken,

In reference to your desire for separate intake & exhaust cams for timing "play", you could go back to the "dawn of time" to the "T-head" engines like those used by Pierce-Arrow and Locomobile in their "senior" cars- these were huge engines: sixes with around 500 ci displacement, and valves en bloc, intakes on one side, exhausts on the other- an early "cross flow"! wink

What I'd kind of like to see is a "hemi" head for a Chevy, something like the Jeep overhead-cam Tornado engine from the sixties; a buddy had one in a '64 Jeep p.u..
Ran great, had lots of torque, great revs, but leaked an unholy amount of oil around the "front plate" that also functioned as front engine mount.

The Chevrolet Bros. started making after-market overhead cam heads for Model "T" engines (Frontenac), after they parted ways with Billy Durant; perhaps we can develop an over head cam for the 235? cool

Guess I'd better lay off smokin' corn silk!
:p

Would make an interesting project for someone with machinist skills and lots of time to putter around. If you didn't care about noise, I would go for the solenoid valve actuators and run them electronically. I know this doesn't have the cool timing chain/belt drive with variable idlers to adjust timing, but it would be cleaner and easier to set up.

Lots of ideas . . . not enough time!
