Would make an interesting project for someone with machinist skills and lots of time to putter around. If you didn't care about noise, I would go for the solenoid valve actuators and run them electronically. I know this doesn't have the cool timing chain/belt drive with variable idlers to adjust timing, but it would be cleaner and easier to set up.

Lots of ideas . . . not enough time!
