I knocked the rear end and springs out of my "52 long bed and need to install the new brass bushings / pins. Several of the old bushings are worn almost through. One old mechanic told me to file / grind through and then collapse the old bushings to help remove them. Going through them and marking the inside of the shackles worries me. I'm sure someone has figured out the best way to accomplish this task. As well as the best way to install the new ones without distorting them.

I guess you mean a 3/4-ton truck: The shop manual has a procedure for this, but your old mechanic friend's method may work as well.

they come out surprisingly easily
a tiny 5 ton press
a big vise
threaded rod with sockets
or cut with a hack saw gently, the spring is so hard you won't really affect it if you reach it, you don't need to cut all the way through the bushing, 90% is good, then start hitting it with a hammer and a steel drift
i used a chisel to cut one out, i had a high quality 1/4 inch one that sliced it like butter

the bushings are standard sizes, don't buy special bushings for the truck at places like LMC or ClassicParts, they are way too expensive
go to McMaster Carr and find them for much less $ by size.

you can cut 2 bushing to make a longer one for the top of the shackle position

the parts numbers above are for 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks, i don't know about the 1/2 tons

A couple of pieces of pipe, some all-thread rod, flat washers and an impact wrench will make a field-expedient press that will remove and install the bushings with the same tool. There's no need to cut them to reduce the press fit.
