First, did the 3100 come from the factory with the SM420 transmission option? If so, does any one have any pictures of the transmission, drive shaft to rear end set up? I’m needing to see that set up as I plan to put the SM420 set up in my 59 3100.Thanks! You can email any pictures to: [email protected]

My long box (59 Apache) model 32 has the factory SM420. A little different than the short box 31 model as the long box has a two piece drive shaft with a carrier bearing. My other 59 Apache which is a model 31 was butchered and hot rodded many years ago by a previous owner so it would be of no help to take any pictures.

Thanks everyone for the information. Would anyone know the measurement of the drive shaft with the male spline that slides into the U-joint yoke on the rear of the SM420 then back to the rear end or where I can get one for my short base 3100. Thanks
on a 59, your SM420 will just have a yoke on the back, as Mike B, no park brake on it. Ed is right, best once the rest of the drivetrain is in and truck sitting properly, measure length between rear end and rear of trans (in between the centers of the u-joint yokes), like where the center of the u-joint cap would be) and get a new one made or find one in a wrecking yard or from a donor truck.
