Just rebuilt the quadrajet on my 350, and it isn't much better than it was before. Problems due to a previous rebuild. Missing springs, bent metering tubes along with a worn out body. Throttle pump lever barely hits the pump due to housing wear, and the shafts leak like a newborn baby. So, I'm ready to spring for a new carb since a rebuilt quad is almost $200. Looking at the Edelbrock 600 #1406. I did look at the Edelbrock Quadrajet, but the $500 price tag is a killer.

Ok Fred, must be the hot rod V-8 in your new purchase?Yeah, we talk inline, but get behind a V-8, push down on the gas, and the 6's are long forgotten.
The Edelbrocks are popular, have you considered a 600 Holley? The Holleys are plentiful on Ebay.Some say the Edelbrock gets better fuel mileage than the Holley or the original Quadrajet.The Quadrajets can be made to run ok, but replace it with the other brand carbs and you'll see an improvement in part throttle power and bog free acceleration.Do you need to use an adapter for your manifold?

Tony, I now have a 69 C-10 with 300 hp 350. Still has the spreadbore manifold, trying to decide on which carb and whether to go with an adapter or to put on a squarebore manifold. Probably will g with the adapter to save some time right now, I need to get it to the tag office.

Also, any suggestions tracking down an exhaust leak? Dang engine is so loud I can't track it down closer than which side. I put in an exhaust gasket set yesterday. New engine, new headers, and it had no gaskets. I tried pouring ATF through the carb, no smoke. Next I tried Kroil, got some, but not enough smoke.

Fred, don't give up on Q-jets just yet. There are lots of good ones on the Bay of E that are cheap. I bought one for my jeep for $40, threw a $20 kit in it, and it ran perfect. Just get one that hasn't been messed up.

I like using a heater hose for finding exhaust leaks. just hold one end up to your ear and feel around with the other end, looking for the hssst sound they make. If it's bad enough that you can plug the tail pipe and the engine still runs, plug it. That will make finding the leak that much easier. Oh yeah, and if you have enough room under the hood, take off the fan (don't run the engine long enough to overheat it) and use a candle to check for leaks. When you find it, it will blow out the candle.

Josiah - Thanks. I had thought about disconnecting the fan this morning. I will try the hose trick this afternoon. I was using a long screwdriver to listen for mechanical noises, found a very noisy generator. I'd consider the ebay route for another qjet, but I have to get an inspection and tag this week and don't have the time. I can go into the parts store and plunk down $240 for a new Edelbrock and walk out with it. It's only my hard earned gun money! No single action 45 Colt this year.
