For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2004 Posts: 9 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Jan 2004 Posts: 9 | ....and happy to join this support group. I have just recently caught this bug.....did my chasing of "tail pipe" and now have a couple of trucks to work on. I have a 53 Chevy 1/2 ton 5 window, it runs fine and once in awhile me and my "little man" take it out for a drive. But lately I feel that I'm being pulled to what some call the "dark side" and wanting to lower the truck, IFS, well I'm sure you guys know.
Anyways a friend of mine has some parts I'm thinking about using and would like your input to see if it's feasible, or even let me know if I should start buying my aspirin by the pound. First I have a chance of getting a Corvette front and rear suspension, I believe it's off a 75 or right around in there. He also has a LT1 from the state Highway Patrol, which is I believe out of a 92 Caprice. Has anyone installed this type of suspension and give some insight to what I'm in for? Or even point me in the right direction for information would be appreciated.

Although I have not had the great joy of grafting in corvette components on both ends (I can hardly type as I salivate!), you might want to consider your final goal first. The original frame of your '53 is pretty simple and accepts many options, but was designed for a pretty tall stance. If you're going low, you may need more notches and other frame mods. I might suggest going to the link section of the Stovebolt site and checking out various retailers. There is a lot of info out there! Pullman minds think alike.
I agree with Phil - make sure you consider suspension travel etc. We are going to have to notch my frame after flipping the axle.
One thing you want to consider width of frame relative to new rear end - will you need to modify the axles? Put your thinking cap on - get the sawzall and welder ready - and HAVE FUN!

I know they sell some kits help an install of this type but I believe they are for 84 to 97. I'm really in no hurry right now but I do have the LT1(Carice)and suspenson(Vette) if I want it. It has been added on to what my buddy calls my grocery list,48 GMC, 29 model A stake bed truck and a 57 Chevy Bel Air 4 door. He has also given me another flathead and trans for my F F F F F F F......trucks. He sure wasn't kidding me on the "chasing tailpipe" problem that can occure.
This mod isn't set in stone......yet!
Thanks, Ron | | |
