On the outside of my differential on my 53 Chevy truck there are 3 bolts evenly spaced on the front of the case near the torque tube These bolts have double nuts on them.

What is their function ????᠁᠁᠁..COULD THESE BE WHAT HOLDS THE REAR OF THE TORQUE TUBE IN PLACE ???

One of them is dripping oil and I am fearful of trying to correct this leak until I know what it`s purpose is.

Thanks in advance...᠁.J

Pinionshaft bearing lock screws. They are rear end bearing retaining screws and hold the propeller shaft /pinon bearing in place within the torque tube. The torque tube is pressed into the front half of the differential housing and is not meant to be separated.

It's shown in the diagram in the shop manual. Mine is also weeping. If we keep the torque tube setup this summer I'll take it out and seal it up a bit better.

I cannot seem to locate that diagram In my Chevy truck manual for the 1948-1953 trucks where it shows those lock screws....under rear axle section page 4-21, it does show the differential and I can clearly see the pinion bearing but not the lock screws...I am trying to visualize" how" those lock screws perform their function of securing the pinion bearing.

This illustration might show one of the adjusting nuts/bolts?

Which year(s) and page(s) Shop Manuals (etc) are being referenced above (by Lindsey, zoegrant, and sstock)?

Thanks, sstock,

Sorry to be so thick:

On that illustration: what is/are the number(s) for the parts in question?

One or two lock screws/nuts in that illustration?

How about a copper washer underneath the nut?

That would work because the nut is just a cinch nut
