Ermey described what it was like to be a DI in the 60s when, out of the blue, the Corps cut 3 full weeks out of boot camp. He said it was emotionally devastating to push out recruits that were rushed through, and then read the names of the KIA in the Marine Corps newsletter in San Diego. He based Gunnery Sergeant Hartmann on that period in time.
