Hello to everyone, its been a while since I was last on the site. I fell into that trap of biting off more than I could chew. The truck has sat for the last decade while my son was in high school and college. I'm now back at it. In that regard, I need help replacing the horn contact in the steering wheel of my 1949. Two questions. One, is the horn contact soldered to the wire that runs down the steering column? Two, How do I remove the contact from the steering wheel? It appears to be a press fit?? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
hi dierks321, i think if i recall correctly, you should not have to remove the steering wheel from the shaft as the contact brush come out from the front side.
once you get the steering wheel nut off the shaft, the horn button retaining assembly comes out, then under that you can pull out the brush there maybe a small plastic bushing in the wheel that is not part of the brush assembly, don't lose it. or you may have a newer combination brush+bushing assembly if it has been changed out before. it is not a press fit, it should be finger tight to pull out at most, i think mine was lose due to wheel material shrinking over the years.
the contact ring and bearing assembly pressed into the steering column has a wire soldered to it that come out under the dash. to remove that part you must undo that screw on the tiny cover where the wire comes out, unplug the horn wire from the truck harness. then after you manage to pull the upper bearing and horn contact ring assembly out of the column the wire will feed up next to the steering shaft out the top.
i attached a few photos of these parts hope that helps stan
