I rebuilt a new lower hinge pocket on the driver's side door pillar and have turned my attention to the upper pocket. The lower was easier as I was replacing the lower patch on the pillar anyway and so just fabb'd up a new pocket.
On the upper though I want to leave the pillar intact which means trying to detach the pocket from the pillar without sacrificing it.
The problem I have is that when I removed the door I had to resort to drilling out the upper bolt as the nut broke its weld and was turning. In the image below the offending loose nut is semi-hidden, in the black circle.
Has anyone managed to dismantle that pocket to replace the nuts? I will have a go at it this week but if someone has already been down that road I want to see if there are any pitfalls before I do. I used search but didn't find any relevant posts.
PS: The lower nuts are not hidden, what is the extra metal in front of the upper bolt. Is it the panel above?

It's likely held on by spot welds. I'd suggest drilling some 1/8 holes for clecos or alignment using a drill bit for later re-installation, and then use a spot weld cutter or other means to remove the cage.

Thanks Robert, yes I was thinking about just taking to it with a wire wheel to uncover spot welds. Good thought on the alignment hole(s), I will do that.
