Trying to do a proper restoration, as close to original as I can. On exterior body color, using cape maroon. Is the underside of the hood painted black or painted body color? I know the firewall is painted body color, just wanting to confirm that the hood is as well. One half of the original was black, the other half was body color. My assumption is body color, but you know what they say about assumptions.

On my '46 it is body color.

My 1950 3100 is body color.

My 54 was black sealer with body colored over-spray. It was original as there is the word "transport" written in grease pencil on the underside which refers to the transport blue lower body color.

Thanks guys! Body color was my thought, just wanted to double check. I know the underside of the hood will be the last piece painted just in case I need to put a light coat over it. No one will ever see it, but trying to do everything as right as I can within reason, and $$!

MY guess is that Greg was not saying that the hood underside was sprayed body color?

I think he was saying that “over spray” from painting the outer surface of the hood was visible on the black sealer on the underside of the hood. My understanding is the black sealer was the majority of the color on the underside of the hood. If I am incorrect, Greg will correct/clarify.

My 1955 1st series has the original satin black with red stamped part numbers on each side. No body color. I left it alone when I restored and repainted the rest of the truck.

Tim is correct in what I was trying to say but again, that was 54.

I am restoring my 1st series.. and I have the hood off.. but the underside of the hood is a bit "grungy" I know most of the history of the truck as I have owned it for a long time.. The original color was ocean blue and i do see the entire hood was painted. The truck was repainted in the early 90s.. but the original color is still present.

So, what is your conclusion/guess regarding the original paint-color(s) under the hood.

I think I can see at least four different colors?

the under side of my 55.1 doesn't have any color but faded black. under the passenger side in some sort of grease pencil or crayon it says "S. Brown" in script hand writing. the fire wall is the original brown. was that mister samuel brown's signature or was it an abbreviation for saddle brown.

Call it 4 primary colors;-) 1. Red is over spray from the last paint job, 2. The brown is rust water from my radiator 3. Black is either grunge or paint.. 4. ocean blue is the last and underneath the other layers. so no idea.. I will know more when I start cleaning it up .. but here is a film for your enjoyment. Sorry I dont have a clear answer..

Question: Does you bed lean to the right a little? My 1st series has always had a bed tilt. I have seen pictures of other 55s with a tilt as well. seemed odd and it doesnt affect the ride.

Just looked at my hood today. Black with Omaha Orange overspray. Didn't take a photo, but center of the panels had overspray and the very center (at the joint) and outside edges of the hood were black (primer?)

Got the hood in the garage yesterday in preparation for straightening the dents in it, so took the opportunity to snap a photo of the underside.

Ok, you made me do it........crappy pics of underside hood, 1954, 3604. Sorry for the poor quality and the lighting, but satin black is what it appeared to be, so "black primer" make sense.
